Treatment for Sexualised and Offending Behaviours

I have completed training at the Institute of Sexology and Sexual Medicine at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Dissexuality Therapy. Dissexuality Therapy seeks to prevent child sexual abuse and the use of child exploitation material, by helping people who are sexually interested in children manage these interests without acting on them.

Psychological treatment is available for individuals who have engaged in, or may be at risk of engaging in, sexual behaviour that has caused harm or concern to others. This includes both contact sexual offences and online sexual offending, such as accessing or sharing illegal sexual material.

Therapy focuses on helping individuals understand the psychological, behavioural, and situational factors that contributed to their behaviour, and on developing safe, prosocial, and respectful ways of relating to others. Treatment is informed by evidence-based, offence-specific approaches that aim to reduce risk, strengthen self-management, and promote accountability and insight.

Therapeutic work may address:

  • Online sexual offending, including the use or distribution of child sexual exploitation material, grooming behaviours, or compulsive pornography use.

  • Contact sexual offending, involving inappropriate or non-consensual sexual contact with adults or children.

  • Problematic sexualised behaviours that have not resulted in criminal charges but have caused distress or concern in relationships, workplaces, or community contexts.

  • Prevention and early intervention for individuals who identify a risk of acting on concerning sexual thoughts or urges.

Treatment integrates a range of recognised frameworks, including:

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to identify offence-supportive beliefs and build self-regulation skills.

  • Relapse prevention and self-management planning to support long-term behavioural change.

  • Empathy and victim-awareness work to increase understanding of harm, consent, and personal accountability.

  • Dissexuality Therapy, a structured therapeutic modality designed to support individuals in understanding and reshaping problematic or harmful sexual interests, promoting healthy sexual identity development and safer behaviour choices.

Each treatment plan is tailored to the client’s background, risk level, motivation, and therapeutic goals. The duration and intensity of therapy vary according to individual needs and referral requirements.

Clients may self-refer, or be referred through the court, legal representatives, or corrective services. Therapy may be undertaken as part of a voluntary rehabilitation process, a court order, or a condition of community supervision.

Where appropriate, treatment progress or completion reports can be provided to referrers, legal representatives, or courts.
